Dear Circus Friends,

We are deeply saddened by the news that our dear friend and coach, Keith Burroughs, passed away early Sunday morning. Better known as “Speedy” to his friends and students, he left a lasting impression on the FSU Circus family. He started his FSU Circus career at the age of 11 as a Callaway kid. Along with his sister Johnna (Burroughs) Staudenmaier, Speedy was a student performer in the Circus from 1979 to 1983. He performed too many acts to list, but he is most famous for the seven-man pyramid on high wire. From 1989 to 1998, Speedy worked at the FSU Circus as Assistant Director, coaching acts and running its daily operations. In 1998, he married the love of his life, Amy (Eckert) Burroughs, who is the big sister of FSU Circus alum Lou (Eckert) Taylor. Speedy and Amy moved to her hometown of Maryville, Tennessee and have three amazing children, Joseph, Julia and Caroline. During his years in Maryville, Speedy continued to share his commitment to empowering young people through circus arts and athletics as an elementary physical education teacher and coach for the Maryville Unicycle Club. To all who knew him, Speedy was a steadfast mentor, coach and friend and the most loyal fan of the FSU Flying High Circus – having never missed a Homeshow from 1979 to 2017. His love of life, family, friends and the FSU Circus is a legacy that will be forever remembered.

Speedy’s family will be receiving friends from 2:00 – 4:00 pm on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at the Smith Life and Legacy Funeral Home’s Smithview Pavilion located at

601 Smithview Drive, Maryville, Tennessee 37803. The Celebration of Life service will follow at 4:00 pm in the same location. The venue is an outdoor pavilion to allow friends and family the more casual atmosphere that Speedy would have enjoyed. Please feel free to dress comfortably.

During the Celebration of Life service, the family will be sharing photos of Speedy’s life. If you would like to share any photos, please upload them to the “Memories of Speedy” Google Photos album. A link to this Google Photos album was posted by Tricia Ravenhorst in the FSU Flying High Circus Alumni Facebook page or you can use this direct link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Fp9dCxnuK9ak7QS6A If you have trouble with either of these options, please feel free to send photos directly to Tricia at psravenhorst@gmail.com by Thursday, August 16th.
